Hartley (Steve) died at 10:25 AM, Friday, February 10, 2006. Father Paul Board (son David's parish priest) came at 11:15 AM and administered the Last Rites to Steve with wife Marie Watts, son David Watts, his wife Louise Watts, granddaughter Katherine Sawyer, and great grandson David Sawyer present. As Steve desired, his body was donated for medical use to the Medical University of Ohio at Toledo. The university picked-up Steve's body at 1:00 PM. Pastor Steve Bauerle of Zion Lutheran Church, Waterville, Ohio, came and comforted Marie and David Watts at 2:00 PM.

Steve left a draft of his obituary in his bible and David Watts updated it slightly before publishing it in the newspaper. Later, another similar obituary draft was discovered in Steve's files. Steve additionally said, "Many thanks to all my doctors - especially Drs. Bhatia and Biswas and the staff of St. Lukes Hospital." Steve ended with "It was good! God Bless the U.S.A."
